Working towards a fishable, top-free swimmable river since 2000

    Hi Katherine

WE are working towards a fishable, swimmable river! The EPA does not clean up down deep. This has been frustrating for us. The city of Pittsfield signed the consent decree which allows for 2 feet of removal at most of the sites. Everything below is staying there which means Pittsfield will remain saturated with PCBs. The groundwater is totally contaminated way down deep! This deal will haunt Pittsfield forever and GE is leaving town.

I read the article about the meeting in yesterdays Berkshire eagle. The last statement in the article was ‘Comment, Be a part of the public process.’ I am disappointed that my previous postswill not be included on this Forum.
Children are allowed to dump garbage all over downtown Public Parks and by not being held accountable by way of fines and/or community service are being told that it is acceptable to grow up and work for companies who also dump pollutants into rivers and onto the land.
I would also like to ask by way of this forum, what the affect on ground and river water is by City workers dumping petroleumblack top sediment all over the ground in a feeble attemp to repair the crater like holes in our streets.

Housatonic River Initiative belongs to the Waterkeeper® Alliance

Waterkeeper Alliance is the international center of a network of Waterkeeper programs. The Alliance approves new Waterkeeper programs, licenses the use of the Waterkeeper names, represents the individual Waterkeepers on issues of national interest, and serves as a meeting place for all the Waterkeepers to exchange information, strategy and know-how. The Alliance and its member Waterkeeper groups meet at least once a year, rotating between regions, and communicates regularly in the interim.
